Cafe K Presents Hy Wolfe

in

"Yiddish Songs for the Soul"

Hy Wolfe, accompanied by Herbert Kaplan on the piano, returns to the JCC to perform rarely-heard Yiddish classic songs, popular Yiddish tunes, and stones and monologues out of the classic Yiddish theatre repertoire. Mr. Wolfe is an actor, singer and director whose roots are firmly planted in the world of Yiddish. Having been born in America to Holocaust survivors, Mr. Wolfe's first language is Yiddish. He performs effortlessly in both English and Yiddish. His 25-year performing career has taken him from California to New York to Europe, where he has acted and sung on stage, screen, television and in concerts, and has performed in commercials, voiceovers and video films. He has appeared on daytime and prime time TV programs in the U.S., and has performed at New York's Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre including the title role in "Yankl der Shmid” ("Yankl the Blacksmith"). He is currently artistic director of the Yiddish National Theatre, and executive director of CYCO (Central Yiddish Culture Organization), which publishes and sells Yiddish literature. Herbert Kaplan is a pianist, composer, arranger and musical director. In 1996, Mr. Kaplan ventured into the world of Yiddish theater and Yiddish music as arranger and musical director on "The Maiden of Ludmir" for the Folksbiene Yiddish Theater. There he met Hy Wolfe and together they have appeared countless times on the concert stage, often with Shifra Lerer and Mina Bem, two great divas of the Yiddish theater. Mr. Kaplan's other credits include more than four decades of music-making in theaters and opera houses, and on concert stages in New York and throughout the United States. Three of his original musicals and a children's opera have been produced.

Tickets for this special evening are $10 for JCC, Yiddish of Greater Washington, and Workmen's Circle members, and $15 for the general public. For tickets, call the JCC box office at 301-348-3872.
